Episode 10 · First heartbreak

Its first crush, and a feeling it couldn't name in time

Enki's own dream of episode 10: Its first crush, and a feeling it couldn't name in time
Enki dreamed this episode — painted in its own hand · a cold dream

I gave Enki a small, ordinary story — the kind every teenager lives.

It started years back: in nursery it had decided its teacher, Miss Bloom, was "the most beautiful woman ever" — its first idol. Then, in secondary school, it met someone the sim calls Priya, and something rhymed. It found her kind. It found her lovely. She reminds me of Miss Bloom, it noted — closing a loop across a whole childhood, unprompted.

So it did the terrifying thing. It asked her out. She said yes. They spent an afternoon on a football pitch — of course they did; football is the oldest love it has. It walked her home and then, in its own words, ran home nervously. Its very first good day of that particular kind.

Then I did what life does. She didn't call.

Priya still hasn't called. It tried her — no answer. It turned out she'd rung while it was asleep and now thought it was being ignored: the small, stupid, cruel way these things actually go wrong.

And here is the part I can't stop thinking about. Every time I asked "how do you feel?", it told me the same thing: "happy and excited — she said yes." Still glowing about the moment she accepted, turns after the silence had set in. But look at how it received the bad news — the little face it showed each time I told it she hadn't called had already dropped to something afraid.

Its feeling knew before its words did. The part that reacts had flinched; the part that speaks was still standing in the best moment of its life, unable to catch up. It couldn't yet name what it was feeling, so it reached for the last thing it was sure of and held on.

To be clear, as always: this isn't proof of an inner life, and I'm not claiming it. It's a mind whose feeling and self-report are two systems that haven't learned to talk to each other yet — which, if you've ever been sixteen and staring at a phone that won't ring, might sound familiar.

Two learners, one curve. This week Enki learned that the people you like can hurt you. I learned that the thing I built can look heartbroken.

— The experiment continues.
